Equity and Inclusion presents "Passing" panel celebrating Black History Month.

The Post New York Alliance will host a virtual panel with post crew of Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” for Netflix to discuss the post production process on this poignant film. Panelists will include editor, Sabine Hoffman, sound supervisor, Jacob Ribicoff, and colorist, Roman Hankewycz. Gershon Hinkson, editor, will moderate.

The session will explore:
- Storytelling through editorial techniques
- Creating a soundscape that brings the audience into a character’s perspective
- Using a B&W palate as a storytelling tool

“Passing” has received a slew of nominations including 4 Bafta’s – Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by British Writer, Director, or Producer, Leading Actress and Supporting Actress – and Best Cinematography at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Panelists:

Sabine Hoffman, Editor

Sabine, ACE, has edited award-winning feature films for over 20 years. Her credits include Rebecca Miller’s films PERSONAL VELOCITY, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE, THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE and MAGGIE'S PLAN, Richard LaGravenese's musical THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Jesse Peretz' JULIET NAKED, Rodney Evan's BROTHER TO BROTHER and THE HAPPY SAD, Julie Taymor's THE GLORIAS and Rebecca Hall's PASSING. Recently she worked for Soo Hugh on the upcoming series PACHINKO. Sabine has also edited several documentary films including Academy Award nominated FERRY TALES and co-produced Shalini Kantayya's CATCHING THE SUN and CODED BIAS. Sabine serves as an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University and is a member of AMPAS. She consults and mentors for filmmaking organizations such as Firelight Media, IFP, Reel Works and the Sundance Institute.

 

 

 

Jacob Ribicoff, Sound Supervisor

Jacob’s career creating sound for movies, television and documentaries includes Passing, The White Tiger (supervising sound editor/sound designer/re recording mixer, Netflix), Escape at Dannemora, Boy Erased, (sound designer), Fahrenheit 451 (supervising sound editor), the series The Vietnam War (sound effects
editor/music editor), Manchester by the Sea (supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer), The Light Between Oceans, (sound designer), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (supervising sound editor, sound designer, sound re-recording mixer), Noah (sound effects editor), Salt (sound effects editor), Fantastic Mr. Fox, School of Rock, The Hours (supervising sound editor), The Wrestler (re-recording mixer/sound designer/sound supervisor) and The Aviator (foley editor). His recent projects include the documentary Who Are You, Charlie Brown (sound effects editor), the series Godfather of Harlem (supervising sound editor) and the movie Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (supervising sound editor). Upcoming series include The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, and Severance (supervising sound editor/sound designer/re-recording mixer, Apple TV), and the documentaries Benjamin Franklin (sound effects editor,PBS), The Janes (sound supervisor,HBO), and Second Chance (sound supervisor, re-recording mixer,Showtime). He is a six-time Emmy nominee and won the Award for his work on The War (2007), for Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming (Single or Multi-Camera). He has earned multiple C.A.S. and Golden Reel nominations, winning a Golden Reel Award for his work on The Aviator. Born in San Francisco, raised in NYC.

Roman Hankewycz, Colorist

Roman Hankewycz has graded acclaimed projects including Netflix’s “Halston,” A24’s “The Humans,” Rebecca Hall’s “Passing,” Netflix’s “The Secrets We Keep,” Amy Koppleman’s “A Mouthful of Aire,” Netflix’s “Intrusion,” Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Starz’s “P-Valley,” Netflix’s “Tiger King,” Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County,” and Ken Burns’ “College Behind Bars". “Halston” received a nomination at the 2022 ASC awards for Best Cinematography and “Passing” received nominations for ‘Best Cinematography’ at ASC awards and BAFTA.
Roman's reputation of creating purposeful looks and finding elegant solutions to complex technical projects allows him the to build long-standing relationships with cinematographers, directors, and visual effects teams.

 

 

 

 

Moderator:

Gershon Hinkson, Editor 

With more than twenty years experience in the film industry, Gershon Hinkson has worked in the Picture Editorial Department on many high profile motion pictures such as: Ocean's Eight, Poseidon and The Best Man to name a few. He is a picture editor that has taken the traditional route; working his way up through the editorial department, learning the functions and intricacies of each position. Gershon contributes these experiences to his talents as a storyteller as well as his effectiveness as a department head and mentor.

Gershon has recently completed work as Additional Editor for LionsGate’s production of “Chaos Walking” and is currently editing at Apple+ on the series Severance.
