GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES 10 NEW YORK-PRODUCED PRIMETIME TELEVISION SHOWS TO PREMIERE NEXT WEEK.
 
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today highlighted 10 New York-produced primetime television shows that are premiering next week for the fall season on CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX. The television shows have spent approximately $596 million combined on production in New York State, and hire more than 34,000 crew and extras. These 10 series premieres represents a significant increase in New York-based shows on air, as there are now more series airing this year than in all of 2013, which was a record-breaking year.

“The resurgence of this state’s film and television industry is a tremendous success for all New Yorkers, who benefit from the billions of dollars of investment and tens of thousands of jobs it creates,” Governor Cuomo said. “Next week’s premiere of an unprecedented number of television shows produced right here at home is a testament to the State’s commitment alongside the hard work of all who support the production efforts.”

The following New York-based productions are premiering this fall (all times are EST):

CBS:
Madam Secretary (9/21 at 8:30 p.m.)
The Good Wife (9/21 at 9:30 p.m.)
Person of Interest – produced by Warner Bros. (9/23 at 10 p.m.)
Blue Bloods (9/26 at 10 p.m.)

NBC:
The Blacklist – produced by Universal Television (9/22 at 10 p.m.)
Mysteries of Laura – produced by Warner Bros. (9/24 at 8 p.m.)
Law and Order: SVU – produced by Universal Television (9/24 at 9 p.m.)

ABC:
Manhattan Love Story (9/20 at 8:30 p.m.)
Forever – produced by Warner Bros. (9/23 at 10 p.m.)

FOX:
Gotham – produced by Warner Bros. (9/22 at 9 p.m.)

Thanks to the New York State tax credits and the strong support of Governor Cuomo, for many of our productions the right answer continues to be New York.”

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said, “NBC is proud of our nearly 40 years of continuous shooting in New York City – dating back to 1975 with ‘SNL’ and including more than two decades of Dick Wolf’s ‘Law & Order’ franchise, among other shows. New York offers every type of location that our productions could ever need – and anchors shows like ‘SVU’ and ‘The Blacklist’ in a realism that is invaluable. With ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ added this season – and “The Tonight Show,” “Late Night” and “SNL” all calling New York home, we look forward to continuing our relationship with the state for years to come.”

Today’s announcement marks the latest film and television achievement for the State in 2014, including:
· The return of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and “America’s Got Talent” to New York;
· The beginning of production in June for Marvel’s new series; and
· The record-breaking number of TV pilots filmed in just the first half of 2013.

“The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and “America's Got Talent” are expected to generate more than $150 million in spending and more than 1,000 jobs combined, while the Marvel series is expected to generate hundreds of millions in spending and more than 3,000 jobs over the course of production.

A total of 23 pilots were filmed in New York by June this year – less than half the time than last year. Additionally, the 23 pilots filmed by June this year yielded an estimated $127 million in spending and 15,915 jobs and hires, compared to 23 pilots filmed with an estimated $117 million in spending and an estimated 13,150 jobs and hires in all of 2013.

Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams said, “New York State is the premiere location for television and film production, offering diverse urban and rural landscapes while providing the talent and resources for the entertainment industry to grow and thrive. Under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, the Empire State production tax credit program continues to be a major attraction for television series as it allows for multi-year planning, creates jobs and boosts New York’s economy.”

IATSE Local 52 President John Ford said, “The impact of the production tax credit is unquestionable. New York was once basically an occasional exterior location for theatrical features. Television production has exploded to become the overwhelming majority of our work. It has created thousands of new, good paying jobs for New York residents. Once again, I applaud Governor Cuomo and the Legislature for their support of our industry.”

Teamsters Local 817 President Tommy O'Donnell said, “Next week, TV viewers will witness what teamster drivers and casting directors have experienced in the past nine months: an explosion of television in New York. The shows that will be premiering have produced a sonic boom in employment of Teamster Local 817 members in particular, and New Yorkers in general. In my mind, this is a win for the viewing public and a win for the citizens of New York State.”

The State’s film and television tax credit program was established in 2004. Since taking office in 2011, Governor Cuomo has made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, as well as the resulting jobs and economic impact, a key component of his administration’s overall strategy for growing and strengthening New York State’s economy. The Governor has signed several important changes into law for the program, which is administered by Empire State Development, to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and these reforms have led to significant results, including the record-breaking year of 2013, as well as the estimated 546 projects filming or applying to the program in the past four years, billions of dollars in spending and tens of thousands of jobs for the State.

Following up form the successful AE/ DIT Seminar, PNYA is holding a series of workshops on the editorial turnover process.

The first, Turnover To Sound, is being held on September 16, 2014 at PostWorks New York.

The workshop will go through the reason for and creation of the key deliverables for sound finishing. Assistant editor and editor Ian Blume and Supervising Sound Editor Alexa Zimmerman will lead the session.

Seating in the theatre for this event is limited, so please RSVP to seminars@postnewyork.org to avoid disappointment. Seats will be allocated on a first-come basis.

The workshop is free for members- non members can sign up on the night!

Speaker Bios:

Ian Blume has worked in feature film post-production for 15 years, spanning such films as CHOCOLAT, DOUBT and THE BOURNE LEGACY.

A graduate of Emerson College, he started out in NYC by building a strong foundation at Sound One. There he established close ties in the industry, and quickly became part of a tightly knit family.

Ian has climbed the ranks as an assistant editor, working on 14 features of all budget levels, in the US and abroad. He has collaborated with many top-tier, award-winning editors, directors, writers and producers, and accumulated valuable experience, technique and guidance from all of them.

Ian lives in Astoria, Queens, and is currently working as editor on his 2nd narrative feature film, DRAWING HOME.

Alexa Zimmerman has been working in the sound post field for 14 years, working most recently as an Supervising Sound Editor on Julie Taymor's MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, dialogue editor on the series BOARDWALK EMPIRE and ROYAL PAINS, and assistant editor on features including THE FIFTH ESTATE and LEE DANIEL'S THE BUTLER.

Film Industry Source of Growth for NYC

New York City’s economy grew by a little over 3% from April through June - slower than the nation's growth. But this was a steady enough pace to bring the unemployment rate down, according to a quarterly economic report released by city Comptroller Scott Stringer.

The city's growing film industry, however, showed much more robust growth. Film production grew by 1,000 jobs over-the-month, which accounted for nearly 40% of the monthly gain in the information sector. Year-over-year, motion pictures increased by 3,000, or 5.8%, to stand at 55,100 jobs, the second highest employment level on record for this industry.

One Year Later, an Effects Empire Grows in Buffalo

In July 2013, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the creation of Empire Visual Effects, a postproduction and visual effects company based out of Buffalo’s Tri-Main Center. The announcement was a major milestone for New York’s burgeoning post-production industry, representing an expansion upstate by a dynamic, growing sector. Empire Visual Effects was part of Governor Cuomo’s “Buffalo Billion” initiative, which will ultimately invest $1 billion in Western New York, aimed at the economic revitalization of the area. As part of the agreement, Empire Visual Effects has partnered with nearby Daemen College to mentor students and forge a true post-production community in Buffalo.

One year after the initial announcement, business is booming at Empire Visual Effects, and projects continue to roll in, benefitting the company itself, students at Daemen’s International Center for Excellence in Animation, and Buffalo at large. One recent triumph was Pepsi’s Grammy Halftime Show, which aired earlier this year. Empire was tasked with making the relatively modest crowd of 150 extras seem like a stadium-full of screaming fans – a challenge it passed with flying colors, and for which it received glowing, well-deserved press coverage.

Since then, it has been a busy few months for Empire Visual Effects — from the rotoscope and paint work it has done on series like HBO’s The Leftovers and the CW’s The Tomorrow People to similar post work on major films, including Darren Aronofsky’s Noah (a participant in the New York State Film Production Credit Program), and the upcoming thriller A Most Violent Year from acclaimed director J.C. Chandor. “The projects have been getting larger as our team has grown steadily,” said Managing Partner Ben Porcari.

Additionally, the partnership with Daemen has become one of Empire Visual Effects’ greatest strengths. Students at the college receive training geared towards the company’s needs and work on high profile projects. “Our partnership with Daemen College has been fantastic,” said Porcari. “The skill level of the artists graduating from their VFX Certificate program is outstanding. Daemen’s recent $2,000,000 investment in technology will definitely make it one of the best equipped schools in all of New York State.” This unique partnership offers an unprecedented opportunity to budding VFX artists in Western New York, giving them a “foot in the door” in one of the most exciting up-and-coming industries the state has to offer...

Central New York Film Hub Builds Film Jobs

On July 18, 2014, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the official groundbreaking of the Central New York Hub for Emerging Nano Industries in Onondaga County, which will specialize in providing advanced visual production research and education to support Upstate New York’s rapidly growing film and television industry.

 

In March, the Governor announced that The Film House, a California-based film and television company, will be the facility's first tenant, and move its headquarters, production, post-production, and distribution operations to Syracuse. The project will create at least 350 new high tech jobs and 150 construction jobs, according to the Governor's office.

The Post New York Alliance now has it's OWN PODCAST!

 

The first in a series of planned seminars for 2014 was recently held at post company Light Iron.The Editorial Assistant and the Digital Image Technician was a discussion between prominent EA's, DITs, union representatives and the audience, and covered roles, process and communication between the camera department and the editorial department on feature and episodic tv projects.

New York Surpasses L.A. in Drama Pilot Production for the First Time #NYFilmJobs

According to an article by Alex Ben Block in the Hollywood Reporter, New York was the city of choice for 24 drama pilots compared to 19 in Los Angeles. The comparison was made for the 2013-14 pilot season, which ran from January through April, 

That was one of the revelations in an annual report on TV pilot production by nonprofit group Film LA released Tuesday. Film LA’s lead researcher, Adrian McDonald, says that makes New York “North America’s most attractive location for one-hour TV pilot production.”

"The Fault in Our Stars" Turns to New York Post & VFX Companies

At first glance, The Fault in Our Stars may not seem like an effects-heavy production. However, the intimate and touching story of two teens living with cancer, based on the book of the same name by John Green, in fact required some intricate effects work. To get the look they wanted, the producers turned to four New York visual effects companies: Phosphene, LookFX, Spontaneous and Scoundrel.

All told, 200 of the film’s 350 effects shots were done in New York, which is also where the film located its VFX office.

The effects work the film required was far from simple. Gus, the character played by Ansel Elgort, has had a leg amputated due to bone cancer. Using shots of Elgort moving with both legs, the team at Phosphene composited a prosthetic leg and stump onto Elgort’s Gus. The production also consulted with doctors to ensure that the remaining part of the character’s leg was medically accurate for the specific amputation he would have undergone...
