Post Break 52: Scripted to Unscripted

Posted By Administration, Monday, June 12, 2023

The WGA strikes have shut down productions across the US and there are more strikes looming with SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild. Even before the strikes started, networks and streaming services were shrinking slates in cost-cutting measures. As a result of all this, post production professionals are facing a shortage of work opportunities.

Is it possible for post people who have been relying on the steady flow of scripted productions to now pivot to unscripted? What are the pathways? Where do the skills for documentaries and scripted features overlap? Where do they differ? Is there enough work to go around?

Speakers:

LIZ YALE MARSH - Executive Producer, Documentaries + Premium Series

Liz Yale Marsh is an Emmy-winning documentary film and television producer under an exclusive overall deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio to spearhead documentaries and premium series for the studio. Liz recently produced the feature documentary Little Richard: I Am Everything directed by Lisa Cortes and Executive Produced by Dee Rees and Rolling Stone, which premiered opening night of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures. The film will be released by CNN Films and HBOMax in summer 2023. She co-created and serves as Executive Producer on the critically acclaimed true crime anthology series It Couldn’t Happen Here, now in production on its third season on Sundance Channel/ AMC+. Previous work includes Co-Executive Producing the 3-part series Manifesto of a Serial Killer for Oxygen, Executive Producing the History Channel documentary History’s Greatest Mysteries: The Death of Bruce, and serving as Co-Executive Producer on the award-winning 4-part Lifetime documentary Surviving Jeffrey Epstein, and The Preppy Murder, a 5-part documentary for Sundance/ AMC, both series directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg. Liz served as Co-Executive Producer on the feature documentary film The Panama Papers, directed by Alex Winter, which premiered in the US at the Hamptons International Film Festival and internationally at IDFA. She was the creator and Co-Executive Producer of NBC’s Emmy-winning series GIVE. Liz was formerly the Head of Documentaries & Premium Series for production company Bungalow Media + Entertainment, where her additional credits include Spring Broke (directed by Alison Ellwood) and the series 36 Hours with the New York Times. Recent editing credits include John Leguizamo's directorial debut Critical Thinking, the Western Old Henry, the cinematic musical Beau and the highly anticipated comedic crime drama Providence. As someone who has occasionally edited non-scripted shows, he has been a vocal advocate for hiring non-scripted Editors and Assistants to work on scripted projects. His enthusiasm for cinematic storytelling is matched only by his dedication to the craft of film editing, his encyclopedic knowledge of the works of Krzysztof Kieslowski and his well-documented weakness for a good doughnut. Post Break 46: Turnover to Sound | Part III

Posted By Administration, Monday, March 21, 2022

The last two sessions were all picture, but this final session on Editorial Turnover focused on sound - what to expect from sound editorial, how an Assistant Editor can best support the sound finishing crew in pulling everything together, and what’s required to get the best out of any mix sessions on your project.

If you're working currently as an Assistant Editor, or you aspire to work in an editorial department of any of the projects going through New York right now, these sessions will educate and inform you as to how to nail this crucial part of any editorial project.

Guest Speakers:

Dan Timmons - Sound Editor at Harbor Picture Company

Dan is an MPEG member and has twice been nominated for Golden Reel Awards with the Motion Picture Sound Editors. He has been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Awards for “Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief”, and “What Happened, Miss Simone?”.

Both of Dan's parents found work with crystals. During film's heyday, his father, Jack, helped Kodak innovate new silver halide recipes for their photographic film as an electron microscopist. Meanwhile his mother, Nancy, discovered a relationship with the crystal stones used in her energy healing practice. Dan’s grandfather worked at Kodak in the 35mm department.

Dan Timmons works in sound at Harbor Picture Company. He is expert with Dolby Atmos sound design, and working with edits that originate in Premiere and Avid. He is interested in the crossover of Avid and Protools. He has interesting insights on working remote in sound with producers and directors.

He worked on the HBO documentary Forever Prisoner, a long-form style film with heavy archival. He worked on “Hale County this morning, this Evening”, and has worked on films with Alex Gibney. Eric Shuman works with Dan as Assistant Editor.

Roman Chimienti - Sound Supervisor

Roman is an award-winning sound designer, editor and mixer based in NYC. Catering post production sound for the film and advertising communities, Roman manages everything from edit and mix for branded content to sound supervisor for feature films. His feature film work include such titles as the much talked about documentaries “WRINKLES THE CLOWN” (2019) and “MADONNA & THE BREAKFAST CLUB” (2019), and the 2021 Shudder Network exclusives “LUCKY” and “DEATH DROP GORGEOUS”.

Additionally, Roman has tackled the roles of director and producer for the new 2020 feature documentary film “SCREAM, QUEEN! MY
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET” which has received a number of awards and nominations.

Jay Pellizi - Sound Designer, Editor, and Mixer

Serving NYC and LA's video production, advertising, and film communities. Jay crafts high-quality sonic content to enhance storytelling for TV, film, digital media, and video games.

From recording VO to the final mix, Jay has worked on thousands of broadcast spots for networks like Nickelodeon, NBC, VH1, CNN, Comedy Central, History, TruTV, MTV, and A&E. I’m an expert at sound design and mixing for advertising, animation, and promos, and have contributed to many Emmy, ADDY, Clio, Telly, and Promax winning campaigns over the years.

In the film and TV world, I have filled every role from Supervising Sound Editor to Re-recording Mixer, Dialog Editor, Foley Artist, and ADR Recordist. I’ve spearheaded audio post-production for an Emmy award-winning TV series and over 100 feature films, documentaries, and shorts that have won accolades at major festivals like Tribeca, SXSW, Toronto, Austin, and Cannes. When it comes to delivery, I’m intimately familiar with the specs, deliverables, and QC process for cinema, broadcast, and Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/Youtube Originals.

Post Break 45: Turnover to VFX | Part II

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 17, 2022

This session covered the VFX editorial process. We heard from a working VFX editor and VFX Supervisor about the VFX shot workflow in editorial through to finishing shots and how they work together. Plus, what to expect from VFX in an editorial sense, and how to deliver successfully.

If you're working currently as an Assistant Editor, or you aspire to work in an editorial department of any of the projects going through New York right now, these sessions will educate and inform you as to how to nail this crucial part of any editorial project.

Panelists:

Kent Blocher

Kent is a VFX Editor based in New York City and has been working in Editorial since 1989. VFX projects include Jarhead with Sam Mendes; Black Swan, Noah, and Mother! with Darren Aronofsky; The Bourne Legacy with Tony Gilroy; Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and Gemini Man with Ang Lee; and Mary Poppins Returns and The Little Mermaid with Rob Marshall.

Alec Styborski

Alec is an Assistant Editor, VFX Editor, and Editor based in New York since 2007. He has worked on various projects ranging from Boardwalk Empire, Life of Pi, Europa Report, American Ultra, and Gemini Man.

Christian Kelley-Madera

Christian Kelley-Madera has been a VFX editor for just about ten years - mostly on the production side but with a few years on the vendor side. Credits include MARCO POLO S1 for Netflix, THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR for Universal, NOELLE for Disney, and BIRDS OF PARADISE for Amazon. His current project involves a full CG character with lots of dialogue - a meaningful new learning experience for Christian. He is always on the hunt for ways that VFX Editorial can work smarter not harder. In his (admittedly paltry) free time, he also directs and co-writes a scripted fiction podcast.

Lucien Harriot - President of Mechanism Digital NYC

For over 25 years, Lucien and Mechanism have been designing and producing award winning CGI, and VFX for feature films, Episodic TV, and spots. The creative studio prides itself in taking the mystery out of the process, working closely with clients through the technical and creative phases, from storyboard to delivery. A fast thinker and problem solver, Lucien is comfortable leading teams of technical artists at the studio or supervising crews on the sets of feature films.
